Great Lakes Railcar (GLR) has personnel with an aggregate of over 80 years of railroad experience. And GLR has owned and operated passenger railroad rolling stock.
GLR has in the past designed and caused production of 5 different AAR approved couplers and associated yokes to modify obsolete passenger car draft equipment for continued operation on the General Railway System.
GLR has provided car and loco air brake maintenance, repair and modification/upgrade services.
GLR has participated and continues to participate with Railinc in the upgrade of the Umler system for over a decade. This includes the general committee work to define the new system, testing of the coding, and continued work to keep the system relevant to all that need to use it. GLR is the ‘go to’ source for the not generally understood rolling stock, e.g. steam locos, passenger cars, work equipment, short lines and small shops.
GLR is a Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) and is registered with the US Government under CAGE code 1C0K7 therefore offering small business utilization credits.
Services Offered by Great Lakes Railcar
AAR/Railinc Umler Activities
GLR provides Umler registration and removal, inspections uploads, individual line corrections on a ala carte basis or by long term contract. The reporting mark assignee designate is always continued as the Administrator. Performance is by Letter of Authority between mark assignee and GLR through Railinc.

GLR is currently responsible for Umler entries for over 5,000 pieces of rolling stock, with customers that range from individual private owners, short lines, regionals and holding companies, industries, and the US Government.
Mechanical Engineering Services
GLR has on staff a degreed mechanical engineer with over 50 years of railroad experience. Services available include car and loco modification/repair design, purchase or insurance inspections, project set up, acceptance inspections and project management.
GLR has on-going working relationships with companies that provide movement logisticals services for cars and locos on their own wheels and equipment loaded on flat cars to include:
Providing reporting mark identification for those without reporting marks moving on own wheels
In 2017 GLR and Railmove Northwest worked with Circus World to move several cars obtained from Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus. Below is a photo of one of the cars in transit!
GLR has been involved in the international movement of 3 locos from Texas to Chile, 9 locos from Pennsylvania to Australia, a caboose from Iowa to the UK, and ‘repatriation’ movements of several passenger cars from Canada to the US.
